Southern University Bangladesh absorbed the Institute under the guidelines of University Grants Commission (UGC) Bangladesh (the highest accredited body for Bangladeshi universities). UGC and the Ministry of Education of the Government of Bangladesh approved Southern University Bangladesh in Chittagong, Bangladesh, under the non-government University Act.1992 & 1998.
Southern University Bangladesh originated from the establishment of an institute in 1998 as an affiliated higher educational center of US and UK universities. After successful operation for a number of years, the promoters of the institute Sarwar Jahan conceived the idea of establishing a private University at Chittagong to cater to the increasing higher education needs of the port city. On the recommendation of the University Grants Commission (UGC), Ministry of Education the Government of Bangladesh accorded approval to this private University on January 14, 2003. The university is administered by Southern University Bangladesh Trust. Southern University Bangladesh has no campus anywhere in Bangladesh.
