General elections were scheduled to be held in Somaliland on 27 March 2017 to elect the President and House of Representatives, but were postponed by six months due to the drought condition in the region. Incumbent President Ahmed Mohamed Silanyo will not be running for a second term.
Background
Parliamentary elections were due to be held in Somaliland in September 2010, and were eventually scheduled for 26 June 2015, but due to the unpreparedness of the National elections Committee the Guurti extended the incumbent's term for a period of 21 months in early September 2015. In November 2015 Musa Bihi was elected as the presidential candidate for the ruling Peace, Unity, and Development Party while he was the chairman of the party. The presidential candidate for the Justice and Development Party will be Faisal Ali Warabe. Warabe became the party's candidate after a long legal and political challenge between Warabe and Jamal Ali Hussein, Warabe has lost two previous presidential elections. However, Jamaal has joined the Kulmiye party and Faisal remains the Chairman of the party as well as the presidential candidate of the Justice and Welfare party.
