Sociedad Explotadora de Tierra del Fuego

The Sociedad Explotadora de Tierra del Fuego (SETF; Spanish: Company for the exploration of Tierra del Fuego) was the greatest company of Chilean and Argentinian Patagonia. It was founded in 1893 and cultivated over 1 million hectares (2.5×10^6 acres) land for sheep farming and private factories like Puerto Bories to process, freeze and export sheep meat.

History

If was founded in 1893 by José Menéndez and Mauricio Braun. Its sheep farming culture contributed to the extermination of the indeginious Ona people of the Tierra del Fuego island.

Under the agrarian reform in the 1960s, the society changed its name in 1964 to Ganadera Tierra del Fuego S.A. and was dissolved officially in 1973.
