Smuggler is a film, TV, commercial, music video and theatre production company founded in 2002 by Patrick Milling Smith and Brian Carmody. It has been awarded ‘Production Company of the Year’ by several leading commercial industry magazines and award shows over the past few years, including 2010 by Creativity magazine and has been awarded the Palme d'Or three times (including most recently in 2015) at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival.

Commercials

Amongst the commercials Smuggler has created is the "Pretty" advertisement directed by Ivan Zacharias, starring Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova, which won two Gold Cannes Lions in 2007, and the Whopper Freakout Campaign directed by Henry Alex Rubin. Whopper Freakout sparked numerous parodies, won the Cannes Lions Film Gold and Cannes Lions Integrated Lion in 2008, and as of January 2008, the 712 minute video at Whopperfreakout.com has received more than 1.3 million views. Psyop won an Outstanding Commercial Emmy Award for Coca-Cola 'Heist' in 2009 and Brian Beletic was nominated in the same category in 2010 for Nike 'Human Chain.' In 2010, Henry-Alex Rubin's Best BuyTwelpforce campaign won the Titanium Grand Prix. 2011 saw Ringan Ledwidge’s Puma commercial ‘After Hours Athlete’ with agency Droga5 win the Cannes Lions Film Craft Grand Prix and the company was awarded its second Cannes Lions Palme d'Or. The Fox NFL commercial "It's Good to Have a Ring" directed by Renny Maslow won a Sports Emmy in 2011. Randy Krallman's Newcastle "If We Made It" featuring Anna Kendrick made the top spot of AdWeek's 10 Best Ads of 2014. Under Armour's integrated effort starring Gisele Bundchen out of agency Droga5, "I Will What I Want," won the Cyber Grand Prix at the Cannes Lions in 2015. Most recently, Henry-Alex Rubin's Gatorade "Made in NY" spot featuring Derek Jeter was nominated for the Best Commercial Emmy.

Music videos

Smuggler has created videos for The Rapture, Swedish House Mafia, Lady Sovereign, TV on the Radio, Gnarls Barkley, The Hives, Franz Ferdinand, Nas, T.I., Juvenile, Kaiser Chiefs, The Black Eyed Peas, Fatboy Slim, and Cee-Lo.

Long form work

Smuggler has created several long form works for Adidas, Officemax, Sony, and the eBay "Let Them Post" campaign. Director Randy Krallman won the Cannes Lions 2009 Film Bronze for "Zack 16."

The Eckō Unltd. viral ad Still Free depicts graffiti artists breaking into Andrews Air Force Base and tagging Air Force One. The internet hoax was released to a few websites. It was later picked up by the internet community, eventually reaching over 17,000 websites. The viral spoof took home the Cannes Cyber Lions 2006 Grand Prix.

Film, theatre, and television

In 2009, Patrick Milling Smith and Brian Carmody formed a film, television and theater division. Smuggler produced Greetings from Tim Buckley featuring Penn Badgley and Imogen Poots and executive produced Jimmy P: Psychotherapy of a Plains Indian starring Benicio Del Toro which premiered at the 2012 Cannes International Film Festival. Smuggler also executive produced Electric Slide starring Jim Sturgess, Chloe Sevigny and Patricia Arquette. Upcoming film projects include Beautiful Ruins, based on the New York Times best selling novel Beautiful Ruins to be adapted by Todd Field, Weightless written by Enda Walsh starring Alessandro Nivola, a remake of cult classic Wild Geese written by William Monahan and the adaptation of Jean Anouilh’s play Becket written by William Monahan and directed by Michael Mann.

Smuggler produced the play Seminar starring Alan Rickman which premiered on Broadway in November, 2011 and also acquired the stage rights to Hollywood legend Robert Evans' memoirs, The Kid Stays in the Picture and its sequel, The Fat Lady Sang which is scheduled to debut on Broadway in 2016.

Smuggler adapted the film Once for the stage. Once (musical) was adapted by Enda Walsh and directed by John Tiffany. It premiered at the New York Theatre Workshop on December 6, 2011 and is produced in association with Frederick Zollo and Barbara Broccoli. After a successful run in previews Once moved to Broadway’s Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre and officially opened Sunday, March 18, 2012. Once is the fastest recouping musical to hit Broadway in over a decade, recouping its initial $5.5 million investment after only 21 weeks and 169 performances.

Once is also among one of the top five most awarded Broadway musicals of all time, winning the Best Musical Award from The Drama Desk, The Outer Critics' Circle, Drama League, and The New York Drama Critics' Circle. It was nominated for 11 Tony Awards in 2012 and won 8 including Best Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Actor in a Musical, Best Orchestrations, Best Scenic Design of a Musical, Best Lighting Design of a Musical, and Best Sound Design of a Musical. On February 10, 2013, Once also took home Best Musical Theater Album at the 55th annual Grammy Awards. In addition to touring the US, Once is currently playing in Toronto, Australia, Korea and London's West End where it was nominated for six Olivier Awards including Best Musical in 2014. It picked up two Olivier awards for Best Achievement in Music and Best Actress. The Toronto production of Once most recently won Outstanding Production of a Musical at the Dora Mava Moore Awards.
