The word Siltcoos is Native American and could refer to the name of a local chief or to a family name. The spelling of the community was formerly "Tsiltcoos" but "Siltcoos" was made the official name by a 1917 Board on Geographic Names decision. In 1916, a railroad station at this locale on the Coos Bay Line of the Southern Pacific Railroad was named "Lane" and a post office named Siltcoos was established. Lane was the last station on the line in Lane County. The name of the station was changed to match the post office in 1921. Siltcoos post office was closed in 1963, with mail going to Gardiner.

Siltcoos became a fishing resort that once had a store, a dance hall (later converted to a boathouse), rental cabins, and a schoolhouse. The store was torn down in 1977. In 2007, Lane Community College renovated the remaining buildings of the former fishing resort, which had been donated to the school in 1972, and opened the Siltcoos Station Retreat and Learning Center.
