Silda (also spelled Shilda) is a Census Town in Binpur-ii Block of Paschim Medinipur district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is located in Burdwan Division. It is a rural business center.

Location

Silda is surrounded by Jambani Block towards south, Binpur-I Block towards east, Jhargram Block towards south, Sarenga Block towards north.

Demographics

Silda has a total population of 5,724 of which 2,861 are males while 2,863 are females as per report released by Census 2011.

Silda has population of children with age of 0-6 of 540 which is 9.43% of total population of Silda (CT). In Silda Census Town, Sex Ratio is of 1001 females per 1000 males which is higher than the state average of 950. Moreover, Child Sex Ratio in Silda is around 1045 females per 1000 males which is again higher than West Bengal state average of 956. Silda Camp Attack , 2010

Maoists attacked Silda camp of Eastern Frontier Rifles in which 24 personnel or jawans were killed February 15, 2010. The camp is located in the midst of bustling market area of Silda in West Midnapore district. The family of slain police personnel received compensation of Rs. 15 lakh from the Centre and the State, while Rs. 1 lakh was given to families of civilians killed by Maoists.

Transport

State Highway 9 (West Bengal) running from Durgapur (in Bardhaman district) to Nayagram (in Paschim Medinipur) and State Highway 5 (West Bengal) running from Rupnarayanpur (in Bardhaman district) to Junput (in Purba Medinipur) pass through Silda.

Education

Silda Chandra Sekhar College was established in 1971 at Silda. It is affiliated to Vidyasagar University. It offers courses in Bengali, Santali, English, Sanskrit, history, political science, commerce, physics, chemistry and mathematics.
