Shirva is a village in Udupi district, Karnataka, India. The village is known for cultivation of flowers, especially Jasmine, called Mallige in Tulu.

Location

Shirva is the largest village of Udupi taluk located on the west coast of India. It is at a distance of 20 km from Udupi and 48 km from Mangalore. Shirva holds many education hubs such as Don Bosco Institution, St. Mary's College, MSRS College and among many others. It is an approachable distance from Manipal, Nitte, Udupi and Karkala. The Mangalore Airport is the nearest airport. There are ten nationalized bank branches and a few regional banks. Shirva is well connected to different places and is a junction to Udupi, Kaup, Moodubelle, Padubidri and Karkala. The UPCL power plant and Strategic Crude oil plants are in proximity of Shirva. There are many temples of which Manibettu Sri Mahalingeshwara temple is the oldest and considered as the village temple. Other temples include Sri Vishnumurthy temple and Kodu Sri Durgaparameshwari temple.

Demographics

The predominant languages are Tulu, Konkani, Beary and Kannada. Hindus, Christians and Muslims are equally populated. Several people from this village, predominantly Christians, are working in western and middle eastern countries. Shirva has traditionally excelled in sports like volleyball, cricket and football at the state level.

The village was in international news during 2012, because of Jacintha Saldanha, a nurse working in King Edward VII's Hospital Sister Agnes, Westminster, London apparently committed suicide because of prank calls from radio hosts pretending as Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles, hailed from this village and she was buried in this village.

Our Lady of Health Church, Shirva

Our Lady of Health Church, which recently celebrated its 100th anniversary, is renowned for its Gothic architecture. The altar had beautiful Roman styled paintings, which has sadly be replaced with new paintings, after renovation.
