The Scotland Institute is a think tank operating in Scotland which describes itself as "progressive and independent". It was founded by Dr Azeem Ibrahim, a Glasgow-born expert in strategic policy development, and formally launched in June 2012 by leading politicians Alistair Darling, former Chancellor of the Exchequer, Liberal Democrat MP Jo Swinson, former SNP Minister for Enterprise and Energy Jim Mather and Scottish Conservative Jackson Carlaw. After producing two reports on poverty and social exclusion in Scotland it produced 'Defence and Security in an independent Scotland', a major SDSR which considered the impact on defence in Scotland in the event of a Yes vote in the Scottish independence referendum, 2014. Dr Ibrahim also wrote a follow-up article expanding the Institute's findings.
