He is a son of former union minister of state for home Mohammed Taslimuddin. He is elected to assembly from Jokihat in Araria district. Alam was first elected to the Assembly on a Rashtriya Janata Dal ticket in 2000.
He was arrested by police in 2010 in an assault case.
On 17 January 2015, Alam was accused of molestation on board Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express train.
On 23 January 2016 Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar suspended Janata Dal (United) MLA Sarfraz Alam, for allegedly misbehaving with a woman on the Dibrugarh-New Delhi Rajdhani Express. A case was filed against him at GRP Police Station at Patna junction and he was booked under Sections 341, 323, 290, 504 and 354A of the IPC.
