Sappinia pedata is a species of Amoebozoa. Sappinia is a free-living amoeba (a single-celled organism), found in the environment. There are two known species of Sappinia: Sappinia diploidea and Sappinia pedata. Sappinia can cause a disease similar to GAE, However only one case of GAE due to Sappinia infection has ever been reported. In 1998, a healthy 38-year-old man from Texas was found to be infected with Sappinia pedata. Although the patient was hospitalized, he survived without any long-term consequences.
