Samuel Morley, 1st Baron Hollenden

Samuel Hope Morley, 1st Baron Hollenden (3 July 1845 – 18 February 1929), was a British businessman.

Background

Morley was the son of Samuel Morley and Rebekah Maria Hope, daughter of Samuel Hope of Liverpool. The Liberal politician Arnold Morley was his younger brother.

Career

He was a partner in the firm of I. and R. Morley and served as Deputy Governor of the Bank of England from 1901 to 1903 and as Governor from 1903 to 1905. On 9 February 1912 he was raised to the peerage as Baron Hollenden, of Leigh in the County of Kent.

Family

Lord Hollenden married Laura Marianne, daughter of Reverend G. Royds Birch, in 1884. He died in February 1929, aged 83, and was succeeded in the barony by his son Geoffrey. Lady Hollenden died in 1945.
