The Ballad of Sam Edney


Samuel "Sam" Edney (born June 29, 1984) is a Canadian luger who has competed since 2000. Competing in three Winter Olympics, 2006 Winter Olympics he finished nineteenth and he earned his best finish of seventh in the men's singles event at Vancouver in 2010 (the best ever Olympic result for a Canadian male luger) and he placed 11th in Sochi, Russia 2014. He was part of the Canadian team (along with Alex Gough, Tristan Walker and Justin Snith) which finished fourth in the team relay at the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Edney's best World Championship finish came at the FIL World Luge Championships where he was five in the men's singles event in Whistler, Canada in 2013, finishing as the top non-German slider. Edney was also part of the Canadian team that won Bronze in the FIL World Luge Championships team relay event at 2012.

Edney has twice placed fifth in World Cup events, first in Calgary, Alberta, Canada in 2009, and secondly in 2011 in Whistler, BC. He scored the first World Cup win for a Canadian male singles luger in Calgary in December 2014.
