Samahang Kapatid is a Filipino dance troupe and nonprofit organization that promotes Filipino culture through dances and charity events.
The group originated in 1999 in a suburban middle school in Darien, Illinois. The group intends to promote "cultural enrichment in a diverse world".
Recognition
The group has performed at multi-cultural festivals throughout the Midwest including a promotion event for the Chicago Olympic Bid in which Mayor Daley of Chicago was in attendance. Samahang Kapatid also performs regularly at the Museum of Science and Industry and the Children's Museum in Navy Pier, Chicago. They have taken extensive trips for performances in Ohio, Florida, and Michigan. One of their notable performances is the Chicago Asian American Festival in 2009 in which they performed with other ethnic groups. Senator Roland Burris, a U.S. Senator from Illinois, and George Van Dusen, mayor of Skokie, a community with one of the largest Filipino populations in America were both in attendance. In January 2009, Samahang Kapatid also performed at the Adventures in Travel Expo (ATE) to help promote the Philippine's significance in the tourism industry.
