Background

Saint Joseph Academy was established in 1890 by the Congregation of St. Joseph. The Academy is owned and operated by the Congregation of Saint Joseph, and it is advised by a Board of Directors representing religious, corporate and nonprofit professionals. The Academy is currently the only all-girls Catholic high school in the city of Cleveland. Forty-seven percent of the students are residents of Cleveland, and 41 percent of students are legacies (daughter/sister/granddaughter/great granddaughter). The SJA student-body represents 51 zip codes and 111 schools from across Northeast Ohio.

Academics

Saint Joseph Academy strives to empower young women to fulfill their dreams and lead lives grounded in their faith, which starts in the Saint Joseph Academy classroom and extends into the real world, where students are encouraged to learn, experience and put their knowledge into practice.

Academic offerings include options for every student at every level in her high school education. Coupled with college block scheduling that’s similar to a higher education environment, a Saint Joseph Academy education prepares students for college in a variety of ways:

-18 Advanced Placement (AP) courses span the arts, literature, science and math. Because students are encouraged to take the level of coursework that’s right for them, a qualified Freshman may take an AP course if she desires.

-31 Honors classes are designed to challenge students’ unique interests and include distinctive options such as Honors Anatomy and Physiology as well as Honors Microbiology/Zoology.

-World Languages help foster internationally-minded students with offerings including three levels of Chinese, French, Latin and Spanish, as well as AP levels for advanced learning.

-The Health Sciences Honors Program incorporates not only relevant coursework, but also clinical hours, in-field research and application opportunities at some of Northeast Ohio’s acclaimed hospitals. Two levels of learning prepare students for a variety of careers in the healthcare industry. The Makerspace is a hands-on innovation area that allows students to experiment and apply learning from multiple subjects – such as designing artwork on computers to producing engineering prototypes on a 3D printer.

-Science and engineering classes are designed to challenge students by applying their learning. Engineering classes include CAD work, programming and architectural design.

-Four years of theology classes help students see faith in everyday life and “serve the dear neighbor” through community involvement. Every student creates an online “Faithfolio,” which is included as part of their final class assessment. A dedicated wellness curriculum emphasizes the interconnectedness of mind, body and spirit. Learning both in and out of the classroom is designed to aid students with their ongoing journey toward wholeness.

Block scheduling

Block scheduling differs significantly from a traditional schedule. At Saint Joseph Academy, each student has only four 85-minute classes per day. At the end of one semester, a student will have completed the equivalent of one academic year of study due to the extended classroom time in each subject.

Clubs and activities

Students are able to join many clubs and activities. In addition, service opportunities are available throughout the year through the CORE Ministry department.

Athletics

The Interscholastic Athletics Program at Saint Joseph Academy exists to provide a quality athletics experience for students who demonstrate an elevated level of skill. The opportunity to compete against another school’s program is secondary to the opportunity to learn valuable life skills in a Christian environment.

It is the belief at Saint Joseph Academy that a comprehensive athletics program will enhance the quality of the educational experience of the students by: -Providing a vehicle by which students of demonstrated ability can be exposed to situations in sport, which allows them to learn and experiment with varied life skills. -Supporting the efforts of the Academy to provide experiences which help participating students maintain or increase their levels of self-confidence and self-esteem. -Contributing to the overall excellence of education by offering a wider variety of experiences to meet a wider variety of student abilities. Setting a standard of Christian behavior modeled by all adult personnel involved.

SJA is home to 13 varsity interscholastic athletic programs: Basketball, Crew, Cross Country, Golf, Indoor Track, Lacrosse, Rugby, Soccer, Softball, Swimming & Diving, Tennis, Track & Field, and Volleyball.

During the 2015-16 school year, nearly 50 percent of SJA students were a member of one of our sports teams, and 24 percent of athletes competed in at least two sports. The average GPA for student-athletes during 2015-16 was 3.63.
