Organization

The agency is currently headed by Sheriff Bryan F. Hutcheson.

Accreditation

On May 26, 2005 the RCSO was accredited by the Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission (VLEPSC). Accreditation was renewed on June 18, 2009.

Agency Divisions

  • Administrative Services Administrative Services provides support to the Sheriff and his staff.
  • Operations The Operations division performs patrol and provides specialized services to the community.
  • Criminal Investigations Criminal Investigations is responsible for investigating crimes within the County and providing specialized services.
  • Corrections The Corrections division operates the Rockingham regional jail. It also provides court security.

  • Auxiliary Deputy Sheriff Program The Auxiliary Deputy Sheriff Program aids the sheriff's office in operations and in administrative matters.
  • Freedom of Information Act Requests The purpose of the FOIA, according to the relevant page of the departmental web site, is "to promote an increased awareness by all persons of governmental activities." Members of the public may make requests by mail, email, fax, or telephone, or in person. Properly requested records are provided in accordance with law and departmental policy.
  • Personnel issues Members of the public may make complaints about from Personnel the Sheriff's office in person of by letter. A member of the public may also indicate when someone from the office should be commended for good performance.
  • TRIAD This is a cooperative effort between the Sheriff's office, various local police chiefs, members of the American Association of Retired People [AARP], and other local leaders. According to the departmental web site, TRIAD sponsors "crime prevention programs for older persons, information on how to avoid criminal victimization, expanded involvement in Neighborhood Watch, home security information and inspections, and personal safety tips".
  • VINE (National Victim Notification Network) The National Victim Notification Network is where concerned citizens or victims can call to ask about an offender's current situation. Victims can register a request for immediate notification should an offender be released, escape, be transferred, or have a court appearance.
  • Fallen officers

    Since the establishment of the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office, one officer has died while on duty.
