Robert H. Carnahan was an American Union brevet brigadier general during the period of the American Civil War. He served enlisted as an officer with the 3rd Illinois Cavalry Consolidated in August 1861. Carnahan's unit served as part of John C. Fremont's effort to capture Springfield, Missouri. When he arrived in Springfield, only 30 families remained. In December 1861, his unit became part of the Army of the Southwest Missouri led by General Samuel Ryan Curtis. Carnahan was a lieutenant colonel by the time of the Battle of Nashville in late 1864.

He received his appointment as brevet brigadier general dated to October 28, 1865.
