An attacking midfielder, Gillies was regarded as one of the most promising youngsters in Scotland when he came into the first team at St Mirren. He attracted considerable interest from Liverpool, Newcastle Utd along with other clubs in both Scotland and England during his first spell at the club before a move to Aberdeen in 1997 for £460,000.

He was awarded a testimonial in 2002, and left for Partick Thistle in 2005. He spent a year as player-coach in New Zealand with Jonathan Gould at Hawksbay United before returning to Scotland.

He is currently Director of Operations for the ProLegal Group in conjunction with PFA Scotland.
