Education and early career

López graduated from Columbia University with an MFA in Film, and from Stanford University with a Masters in history. He served as legislative assistant to Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, was Executive Director of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, and was a political appointee in the Clinton administration.

Film career

López was Director of Photography on the mockumentary Filmic Achievement in 2005 and worked with writer-director Kevin Kerwin and producer Kate O'Neil, both from Authentic Films.

He has filmed more than 50 features, shorts, commercials, and documentaries. His work has been shown at the Berlin Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, Slamdance Film Festival, Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival, the Hamptons Film Festival, and Camerimage.

He co-directed the Emmy nominated, History Channel mini-series, The World Wars He is currently in production on American Genius, an eight-episode docu-drama for the National Geographic Channel. In 2014, he was director and writer on The Seance, a pilot for A&E.

López was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for his work as cinematographer on The Men Who Built America an 8-hour mini-series for the History Channel.

He was the cinematographer for Gold Fever a four-hour docudrama shown by the Discovery Channel in 2013.

His last feature film was The Girl Is in Trouble, for which Spike Lee was executive producer. López was awarded the Kodak Vision Award for Best Cinematographer at the Slamdance Film Festival for his work on I Sell the Dead. He was later an adjunct professor of cinematography at his alma mater, Columbia University.
