On 4 January 2015, Pope Francis announced that he would make him a cardinal on 14 February. At that ceremony, he was assigned the titular church of Santa Maria in Vallicella.

In April 2015 he was appointed by Pope Francis to serve as a Member of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and of the Pontifical Council for Culture.
