Set-Up

A brilliant Oxford mathematics student is shot at close range while participating in a sleep study. Inspector Lewis is back from a stint overseas and is met by DS Hathaway at the airport.

Investigation

Lewis is temporarily assigned by DCS Innocent on this murder case, while Granger is away and DS Hathaway is assigned as his sergeant.

The young woman, Regan Peverill was participating in a sleep study and was shot dead in her bed. A close friend of hers, Daniel Griffon was suspected because his key-code was used to access the door at around the time she was murdered. He was questioned but had an alibi with his maths tutor with whom, he spent a great deal of time with. Before Regan died, she emailed a document to Daniel Griffon who received it after the university email server recovered from some error/failure.

Daniel's family owns an automotive empire and his father was killed in an accident many years before. Daniel never got over the fact that it was an accident and suspected that his uncle, Rex Griffon of murdering his father. Daniel stands to gain control of the company in a year when he reaches the age, and his great grandfather specified that the empire will always go to the first born son. Hence, his inheritance of the empire, instead of his uncle. He also suspected that his mother was having an affair with Rex Griffon. He, like Regan who was murdered, was driven by passion for mathematics.

Rex and Daniel's mother, Trudi Griffon lives in the same mansion but on separate wings of the big house. However, they are not having an affair. The financial advisor, Tom Pollock lives in the servants quarters and was hired after his father had worked for the family for generations. He was having an affair with Daniel's mother for years. He had a daughter about the age of Daniel, studying and vying for the "Endeavour Award" for young musicians.

Before Lewis and Hathaway could pursue him as a suspect, Daniel is found on a rowing boat in the river with a gunshot wound to the head, murdered by the same calibre gun as Regan. Hathaway notices that the oars were set up wrongly and it did not look like a suicide. Tom Pollock was also shot dead in the bathtub, and was found by Daniel's mother. She contacted Rex and they both covered up the murder, thinking it was Daniel who did it. A CCTV footage shows Rex Griffon driving the car into a parking lot, in which the body of Tom Pollock was found. When confronted, Rex Griffon told DI Lewis what happened.

Conclusion

It was revealed that Regan was murdered by the math tutor, because she could prove his mathematical theory wrong. When confronted by Daniel, he then killed Daniel because he received the email as an insurance from Regan. He mistakenly murdered Tom Pollock, who he thought was Rex Griffon in the bath tub. Tom was murdered to make it appear as though Daniel killed Rex and the Regan. It was also revealed that Tom Pollock was his real father, and this was the last thing Daniel's mother (Trudi) told Daniel's father before he drove off and killed himself in the accident.
