Regional Federal Courts

The Regional Federal Courts (in Portuguese, Tribunais Regionais Federais, commonly called TRFs) are the appellate courts of Brazil's federal court system. There are currently five Regional Federal Courts, one to each geographically defined Federal Justice region. They are composed primarily by career judges, promoted alternatively between seniority and merit. The Brazilian constitution mandates that a fifth of the members should be lawyers and public prosecutors, chosen in an alternate manner.
