Recover (band)

History

Recover is an influential post-hardcore band composed of Dan Keyes (guitar/vocals), Robert Mann (guitar/vocals), Ross Tweedy (bass), and Santiago "Jimmy" Vela III (drums). The four first started playing together while in junior high school, under different names, but didn't officially form Recover until 2000. The band recorded a four-song demo in the spring of 2000. The demo found its way to Fueled by Ramen via the band's friends in fellow Austin band The Impossibles. The band would eventually sign with the label and release their debut album, Rodeo & Picasso, in the summer of 2001.

The band toured extensively in support of the album, and in 2002, released a follow-up EP on Fiddler Records, Ceci n'est pas recover. The band continued their exhaustive touring schedule, opening for bands such as Jimmy Eat World, AFI, The Get Up Kids, Braid, Thrice, as well as up-and-coming bands such as Finch, My Chemical Romance, Thursday, Taking Back Sunday and Coheed and Cambria. After major label courting, the band would eventually sign to Universal imprint Strummer Recordings, alongside The Rapture and The Mars Volta, in late 2002 and continue heavy touring throughout 2003 and 2004.

In summer 2003 the band retreated to Austin Texas to write and record demos for their second full-length "This May Be The Year I Disappear" with the help of producer and friend Rory Phillips, a process that would take almost eight months, due to recording setbacks and producer shifts. The band moved to Los Angeles and recorded, then scrapped an entire album of material with Linkin Park producer, Don Gilmore at NRG Studios in North Hollywood. According to the band's A&R and label, the recordings weren't up to par with the original demos recorded by the band months earlier, so the band headed back to Rory Phillip's studio in Austin Texas to proceed recording. They recorded a few new songs and had them mixed, along with a handful of the original demos, by Andy Wallace. This May Be the Year I Disappear was released in October 2004. The album marked a significant change in sound, with the band moving away from their signature post-hardcore sound and toward a pop rock sound, polarizing many of the band's fans.

The band embarked on a co-headlining tour with Armor for Sleep and openers Say Anything in early 2005. Later that year, the band suddenly had a hiatus, citing Keyes' desire to move to New York and start a new project as the primary reason.

On April 30, 2007 the band announced they would be playing their first show in two years for the Everyone Knows Everyone music festival in Austin on June 30, 2007 at Emo's.

After an eventual reformation in the form of Young Love, in early 2009 the band announced that they had officially reunited and would perform several pop-up shows in California, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Texas in 2010.

In December 2010 the band announced on Twitter that there would be two Recover releases in 2011, one being the official release of "Challenger" and the other entirely new material, which has yet to surface.

In December 2011 as well as 2012, the band held a surprise holiday party at Austin's 29th Street Ballroom, playing songs based on the release of their "Challenger" digital release.

The band's members currently live in separate cities and have shown no immediate signals of new material or touring. Though, in December 2016, the band was billed and rained out of Margin Walker's Sound On Sound festival, which subsequently resulted in a surprise performance at Austin's The Mohawk, their first performance in 5 years.

Current projects

By the end of 2005, Dan Keyes relocated to New York and his new dance-rock project, Young Love, was signed to Island Records. The band released an EP in 2006 and their debut full-length "Too Young to Fight It" in early 2007. Robert Mann is credited on the album and played guitar on tour with the band as well as Ross Tweedy on performing live on bass. After several line up changes within the band, Santiago Vela III joined the band for their second album, "One of Us", released in April 2009 on Island Records.

Dan Keyes would also later span out by co-songwriting and producing material for various artists centering on New York City, Texas, and Los Angeles also having performed solo in New York City, Burbank, and Austin, Texas in 2011 and 2012. In 2012, Keyes signed to songwriting and production imprint Pulse Recordings, based out of Los Angeles, CA.

In early 2012 Robert Mann debuted a new band, Hector's Pets, based in Brooklyn, New York, releasing a self-titled 7" on Austin, TX's Burger City Rock n' Roll label in 2013, and full length album, Pet-o-feelia, on Oops Baby Records in 2014.

In early 2010, Santiago "Jimmy" Vela III and Ross Tweedy joined with members of Austin band, Visitors, forming Tow The Line, self-releasing material and playing various shows across Texas. Vela also spent a brief period filling in with fellow Austinites, The Impossibles.

On 17 October 2011 The Sword announced they had picked Santiago Vela III as their permanent drummer. In 2016, Dan Keyes began a new band, Cologne, with former Soft guitarist, Vincent Perini, based in Los Angeles, California. Also, in 2016, Robert Mann debuted a new project, Bob Mann & The Rolling Thunder, based in Brooklyn, New York.

Albums

Also, they recorded Challenger in 2003, which was released temporarily on the internet about the time the band stopped performing in 2005. Challenger was a collection of B-sides from the "This May Be The Year I Disappear" demo sessions, recorded with Rory Phillips in Austin Texas. It was officially re-released on Animal Manufacturing Co. in January 2011, and later released on clear 180-gram vinyl through Animal Manufacturing Co. in July 2013. On July 26 2011, the band web-released "The Segues From Rodeo & Picasso", via Fueled By Ramen's website and their own social media outlets. It was a collection of 16 tracks of original studio recordings of the segues recorded for their debut album, Rodeo & Picasso, recorded by Bob Hoag and Rory Phillips in 2001 at Flying Blanket Studio in Mesa, Arizona. In June 2013, the band announced a forthcoming re-release of "Ceci n'est pas recover" on 10" vinyl, through Animal Manufacturing Co. It was released in 3 colored versions, in partnership with Fadeaway Records, one variants proceeds 100% being donated to a charity that supports and nurtures young musicians.
