Raymond Protti was the director of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) from 1992 through 1994. More recently, he was the President of the Canadian Bankers Association.

In 1993 Protti testified to Parliament that a "visiting research scientist" had sought to acquire a deadly fungus while in Canada. That October, Protti sent a letter to Solicitor General Herb Gray announcing that a former KGB spy who had spied on Canada was under criminal investigation for breaching the Security of Information Act, though CSIS finally opted not to pursue the case because they feared the Security of Information Act might be challenged under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

He was appointed to sit on the Board of Governors for Ryerson University in 2003.

Protti is reportedly an aficionado of opera, and in 2012 played the role of Senor Alcada in Pacific Opera Victoria's production of Carmen.
