Rawat is one of the cognate Hindi variations of the (originally Hindu) title Raja(h) (like rawal), used as equivalent royal style in certain princely states, notably of former British India.

It occurred (only?) in few princely states in present India, notably:

  • Baramba (until 1874; then restyled Raja)
  • Rajgarh (until 1847; then a single Nawab restyled during a reign; from 1880 again two Rawats; from 1886 restyled Raja), now in Madhya Pradesh

    • The nominally higher title Maharawat -equivalent to Maharaja(h)- was used in

  • Partabgarh=Pratapgarh (formerly Kanthal)
  • Piploda (one ruler, 1863-88; previously merely Thakur; later Rao, again equivalent to Raja)
