Taxonomy

Cnemaspis ranwellai was described as a species new to science by L.J.M. Wickramasinghe in 2006. However, in 2007, after further review, Wickramsinghe and Munindradasa determined that C. ranwellai is a synonym of C. scalpensis.

Etymology

The specific name, ranwellai, is in honor of Sri Lankan herpetologist Sanjeewa Ranwella (1965–2003).
