R W Roden was born in Mackay, Queensland 8 November 1925 and is arguably the most successful horse trainer that Queensland has ever produced. His most famous achievement was training Macdougal to win the 1959 Brisbane Cup, AJC Metropolitan Handicap and Melbourne cup in a space of 5 months, a feat not achieved before or since. In a relatively short training career of less than two decades and with only a small team of horses he trained many other classic, group and listed winners including: Kev Mar, 1953 Queensland Guineas. Gresford, 1954 QTC Lightning Hcp. French Charm, 1955 Moonee Valley Stakes, 1956 Theo Marks Quality. El Khobar, 1956 Doomben 10,000, QTC Ascot Hcp. AJC Warwick Stks. Barron Boissier, 1957 Hotham Hcp. Colin Stephens Stks. 1958 Alister Clark Stks. Raajpoot, 1961 Queensland Derby and Queensland Cup. Hoa Hine, 1962 QTC Oaks. Nebo Road, 1965 Breeders Plate, 1967 Newmarket Hcp. Honeyland, 1967 Canterbury Guineas. Divide and Rule, 1969 AJC Derby, 1970 Doomben Cup, 1970 Stradbroke Hcp. He died in 1991 aged 65 and is survived by his two sons. Daniel, who operates a nursery in South Australia, and Richard, an accomplished author/musician/artist who lives on the Gold Coast.
