Club career

During a 16-year professional career, Quim played for four teams. He started out at hometown side Rio Ave FC, achieving two top division promotions with the club during his six-year spell, following which he signed for FC Porto, aged 25.

With Porto, Quim was only regularly used in two of his five seasons, helping it to the conquest of three leagues, one cup and two supercups. He also played the first 45 minutes of the 1986–87 European Cup final, as the team came from behind to win it 2–1 against FC Bayern Munich for its first triumph in the European Cup; also from the bench, he also appeared in that year's Intercontinental Cup, won against C.A. Penarol in extra time.

For the 1989–90 campaign Quim joined lowly F.C. Tirsense, contributing with 2,500 minutes as the northerners achieved their best-ever classification in the top flight (ninth), after which he played with S.C. Farense for two years, also in the main category. He then returned to his first club Rio Ave for a couple of second level seasons, retiring from the game at nearly 35.

Quim coached several teams in the 90's/2000's, never in higher than the Portuguese third division.

International career

Between 1985 and 1987, Quim won four caps for Portugal, being overlooked for the squad that competed at the 1986 FIFA World Cup.

He represented the under-20's in the 1979 FIFA World Youth Championship in Japan, appearing four times for the eventual quarterfinalists.
