Overview

After the roller-coaster events of season one, in which she cleared her name, saved millions of lives, and discovered that the mastermind behind it all was the very man who had trained her at Quantico, American heroine Alex Parrish was given a shocking reward: She was fired by the FBI. But in the final moments of the season finale, she was given the chance to serve her country again, in the clandestine ranks of United States' top intelligence agency, the CIA. When season two begins, Alex finds herself at "The Farm", the CIA's mysterious training facility.

Development

Quantico was renewed for a second season on March 3, 2016, by ABC. On April 22, 2016, The New York Times reported that the production of the show would be moving to New York City for the second season. Show-creator Joshua Safran said that the reason for the move was because "Season 2 is going to be very much more a New York story." It was later announced that the second season will premiere on September 25, 2016. Filming for the second season started on July 13, 2016, confirmed by Priyanka Chopra. On August 10, 2016, Chopra shared the promotional poster for the second season on Instagram. It was announced after the mid-season finale had aired, that the show will move to Mondays 10:00 p.m. beginning with the mid-season premiere on January 23, 2017.

Writing

Safran called the second season more "cohesive", and will be structured like the first season as he said "Season 2 will keep the two storyline structure. This one is one full story, and then one slow thing. It's a cleaner build, that's the best I can say. It will be less confusing." but the season is structured "a little bit slower" In another interview, Safran confirmed that the structured would be "a little bit of flash forward, but the majority will be, what I like to call, the present."

Safran talked about the differences between the FBI and CIA as he said "We're very interested in the fact that the FBI's so much about being honest, truthful and living up to your badge. And the CIA is the opposite. You succeed if you can deceive. So it's going to be interesting to see. It's like a funhouse mirror of what we've seen."

Casting

After the first season had aired, showrunner Joshua Safran confirmed that the series regulars from the previous season would return for the second season, except Josh Hopkins, Tate Ellington and Anabelle Acosta whose characters were killed off in the first season. Safran expressed interest in bringing back Marcia Cross as Claire Haas after it was revealed that she was involved in the bombing scheme last season.
