Purplebricks was founded by brothers Michael and Kenny Bruce after selling their Midlands estate agent Burchell Edwards to Connells in 2011, along with David Shepherd. As of December 2015, Purplebricks had a 60% share "among the top six online estate agents".

Investors include Neil Woodford, Paul Pindar and Errol Damelin.

In December 2015, The Guardian reported that Purplebricks was set for flotation and would début on London's AIM on 17 December, with an anticipated valuation of £240 million.

In December 2016, it was reported that Purplebricks had made its first ever profit, a modest £300,000, in the six months to end October 2016.
