Protein subfamily is a level of protein classification, especially involving protein 3D structures. A protein family in the SCOP (Structural Classification of Proteins) means the members are all related, with very similar structural and functional characteristics. A protein subfamily has stricter criteria, indicating that its members share the same interaction interfaces and interaction partners.
