Promtov's sign

Promtov's sign, also known as "Promtov's symptom" is diagnostic symptom in gynecology.

In case of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), performing a bimanual gynecological examination is painful for patient. The patient during the examination complains of pain in the lower abdomen. In this case, patient symptoms is then called "Promtov positive".

Pain is caused by adhesions of connective tissue in the lower abdomen, which in turn is caused by inflammation (mostly chronic) in the lower abdomen (PID). It might be a consequence of STD, which is usually the case. Another possible course is endometriosis, then the patient might also complain of strong abdominal pains during menstruation. In endometrosis, adhesions are caused by aseptic inflammation.
