The Privy Council Office (PCO) provides secretariat and administrative support to the Lord President of the Council in his or her capacity of president of Her Majesty's Most Honourable Privy Council. The head of the office is the Clerk of the Privy Council. The PCO is an independent unit based in the Cabinet Office.
It has an office in Carlton Gardens.
Judicial committee of the Privy Council
As well as the Privy Council itself, the Privy Council Office also supports the work of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, which hears a small class of domestic cases and also acts as an appeals court for several independent Commonwealth countries, the British Overseas Territories and the British Crown dependencies, either in the course of performing the judicial function of the Privy Council, or by arrangement with the relevant countries. The Judicial Committee of the Privy Council is co-located with the Supreme Court; previously it sat in the Privy Council Chamber in Downing Street.
Privy Council judges read documents and, until 1966, gave the Queen advice in the form of one opinion. Dissenting judgments are now permitted. In 2011 there were 45 appeals to the Privy Council.
