Prairie Plant Systems Inc. (PPS), founded in August 1988, is a privately held plant biotechnology company specializing in biopharmaceutical and agricultural products. The company specializes in the principle of manufacturing pharmaceuticals derived from harvestable plants grown in biosecure Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) production facilities, including medical cannabis for clinical trials, research and direct to patients through their CanniMed subsidiary.

PPS began its business by advancing agricultural biotechnology to provide fruit tree stock to commercial and private orchards. Fruit products include Saskatoon berries, haskap (blue honeysuckle) and dwarf sour cherries. PPS provides agricultural contract services including Pre-Elite seed stock potato plantlets, tubers and other research and propagation services.

Until March 31, 2014, PPS was the sole supplier of medical marijuana to Health Canada for the duration of the Marihuana Medical Access Regulation.

History

1988 – Established as a privately held plant biotechnology company with a focus on research and development

1988 – Development of micropropagation protocols and in vitro rooting techniques for the Saskatoon berry tree, a hardy fruit-bearing tree native to Saskatoon, Canada. This initial corporate program effectively produced disease-clean trees, critical for the use in commercial Saskatoon berry orchards.

1990 – Research endeavours continued to include 29 different varieties of plants in culture including Saskatoon berries, apples, plums, raspberries, cherries, cutleaf birches, miniature roses and several medicinal plant species.

1990 – Joint venture with Hudson Bay Mining to establish an underground growth chamber 365 metres below ground in Flin Flon, Manitoba providing further opportunities for diversification and expansion of services.

2000 – Awarded a five-year, $5.5 million contract by Health Canada for The Development of Comprehensive Operations for the Cultivation and Fabrication of Medicinal Marihuana.

2000 – Launched SubTerra, a Michigan-based subsidiary specializing in plant made pharmaceuticals

2004 – SubTerra acquired the White Pine underground mine in Michigan

2009 – Medical marijuana project moved above ground to a newly constructed 35,000 sq. ft. facility in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

2013 – Established CanniMed Ltd. a licensed producer of medical cannabis under the Marihuana for Medical Purposes Regulations (MMPR) governed by Health Canada

2014 – Acquisition of the P.M. Power Group (White Pine, Michigan). The transaction included the acquisition of White Pine Electric Power LLC, White Pine Copper Refinery Inc and UP Power Marketing LLC.
