Porto Novo is a concelho (municipality) of Cape Verde. Situated in the southern part of the island of Santo Antão, it covers 72% of the island area, and is home to 41% of its population, the municipality is the second largest and the seventh most populated in Cape Verde. Its population at the 2010 census was 17,906, some read as 18,028. Its capital is the town Porto Novo.

Its highest point, which is also the highest point of the entire island, is Topo da Coroa, elevation 1,979 metres (6,493 feet).

History
The municipality Porto Novo was created in 1971 when the older Municipality of Santo Antão was redivided in 3 municipalities: Ribeira Grande, Paul and Porto Novo.
Economy
Agriculture is the main productivity of the western and northwestern parts, urban jobs especially at the ports are the main economy of the eastern part. Pozzolano is the main industry of Port Novo founded in several areas ane are used for home bricks
Sports
The Santo Antão South Zone includes football (soccer), basketball and volleyball sports, it covers the whole municipality.
Politics
Up to 2012, the Movement for Democracy was the ruling party, the PAICV took power and is the ruling party of the municipality and the assembly with the 10 seats.
