Portland is a city in and the county seat of Jay County, Indiana, United States. The population was 6,186 at the 2015 census.

History
Portland was platted in 1837. It was named after Portland, Maine.
The Jay County Courthouse, Portland Commercial Historic District, and Jonas Votaw House are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Geography
Portland is located at 40°26′2″N 84°58′48″W (40.433884, -84.979914), along the Salamonie River.
According to the 2015 census, Portland has a total area of 4.1 square miles (10.62 km2), of which 4.1 square miles (10.62 km2) (or 99.76%) is land and 0.984 square miles (2.55 km2) (or 0.24%) is water.
2015 census estimates
As of the census of 2015, there were 6,186 people, 2,607 households, and 1,620 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,508.8 inhabitants per square mile (582.6/km2). There were 2,928 housing units at an average density of 712.7 per square mile (275.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 96.49% White, 0.37% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 1.8% from other races, and 0.84% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.36% of the population.
There were 2,739 households of which 27.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.9% were married couples living together, 12.1% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.4% had a male householder with no wife present, and 36.1% were non-families. 32.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.28 and the average family size was 2.86.
The median age in the city was 38 years. 23.1% of residents were under the age of 18; 9% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 26.8% were from 25 to 44; 22.2% were from 45 to 64; and 18.8% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 87.9% male and 12.1% female.
2010 census
As of the census of 2010, there were 6,223 people, 2,607 households, and 1,620 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,338.3 inhabitants per square mile (516.7/km2). There were 3,005 housing units at an average density of 646.2 per square mile (249.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.5% White, 0.4% African American, 0.5% Asian, 3.1% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.8% of the population.
There were 2,607 households of which 30.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.7% were married couples living together, 14.0% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.4% had a male householder with no wife present, and 37.9% were non-families. 32.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.89.
The median age in the city was 39.4 years. 23.7% of residents were under the age of 18; 8.6% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 25.1% were from 25 to 44; 24.7% were from 45 to 64; and 17.9% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 46.8% male and 53.2% female.

The racial makeup of the city was 96.49% White, 0.37% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander 1.80% from other races, and 0.84% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.36% of the population.
