Porter King

Porter King (November 24, 1857 – October 24, 1901) was born in Marion, Alabama, attended Howard College and graduated in 1878 then studied law at University of Virginia in Charlottesville. He came to Atlanta as a lawyer in 1882 and in 1889 was elected to represent the Sixth Ward in the city council. He served as the 34th Mayor from 1895 to 1897 and was reluctant to run for any office again until friends convinced him to run for the Georgia General Assembly in 1900. He served one week before vacating his seat and died later that year after a "stroke of apoplexy" in his Atlanta home.
