Taxonomy and systematics

The name pitohui is somewhat confusing as it refers to both the genus name and also to all the species containing that name. Currently, there are eight species of birds called pitohui, and historically all were classified in the genus Pitohui. Now however, they have been separated into three families and multiple genera. The genus Pitohui is now placed in the family Oriolidae, with the other pitohuis placed in the families Pachycephalidae and Oreoicidae.

Extant species

Four extant species are recognized:

  • Northern variable pitohui (Pitohui kirhocephalus)
  • Raja Ampat pitohui (Pitohui cerviniventris)
  • Southern variable pitohui (Pitohui uropygialis)
  • Hooded pitohui (Pitohui dichrous)
  • Former species

Formerly, some authorities also considered the following species (or subspecies) as species within the genus Pitohui:

  • Crested pitohui (as Pitohui cristatus)
  • Black pitohui (as Pitohui nigrescens)
  • Black pitohui (meeki) (as Pitohui meeki)
  • Morningbird (as Rectes tenebrosus or Pitohui tenebrosus)
  • White-bellied pitohui (as Pitohui incertus)
  • Rusty pitohui (as Rectes ferrugineus or Pitohui ferrugineus)
  • Rusty pitohui (leucorhynchus) (as Rectes leucorhynchus)
  • Rusty pitohui (holerythrus) (as Rectes holerythra)
  • Little shrikethrush (obscura) (as Rectes obscura)
