The six Piratini-class patrol vessels were built for the Brazilian Navy at the Rio de Janeiro Navy Arsenal. Based on the Cape-class cutters, they were built between 1970-71 as Coastal Patrol Vessels. In 1993 they were moved from coastal patrol to riverine patrol. Originally delivered with twin .50cal machine gun mounts and a single .50cal or 81mm mortar mount, in 1985 these were replaced with 12.7mm machine guns and an Oerlikon Mk10 20mm cannon, with an option for an 81mm mortar mounting.
