On October 30, 2007, Pierre Bürcher, until then Titular bishop of Maximiana in Byzacena and Auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Lausanne, Genève and Fribourg, Switzerland, was appointed Bishop of Reykjavík by Pope Benedict XVI.

He resigned September 18, 2015 and Pope Francis appointed new bishop David Tencer OFM Cap.
