Early life and ministry

Philip was born in Wales in 1939. His late father, Stanley Lewis Powell (1911–98), was an Assemblies of God (AOG) pastor. He migrated to New Zealand in 1951 with his Welsh parents, sister and brother. He has been a preacher of the Gospel since the age of 14.

He received his theological training at The Commonwealth Bible College, New Farm, Brisbane, Australia from 1957 to 1959.

He has served the church throughout his working life as follows:-

  • Sandgate AoG in Brisbane, Australia – Student Pastor – 1959
  • Palmerston North AoG, New Zealand – Assistant Pastor – 1960
  • Rotherham Pentecostal Church, Yorkshire, UK – Assistant Pastor 1961
  • Bethel Pentecostal Church, Droylsden, Manchester, UK – 1962 to 1978 – Pastor
  • Katoomba Christian Fellowship, Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia – 1978 to 1980 Pastor
  • Living Waters AoG, Kyabram, Victoria, 1981 to 1988 – Pastor
  • From 1989 to 1992 he lived in Adelaide, Australia, and served as National General Secretary of Assemblies of God in Australia. He was also the Editor of the monthly magazine "Australian Evangel" for most of that time.

  • Hamilton Christian Fellowship, Hamilton, New Zealand – 1992 to 1994 – Pastor
  • Itinerant Ministry – 1994 to 2000
  • Jimboomba Baptist Church, Brisbane, Australia – June to December 2000 – Caretaker Pastor
  • In his capacity as National General Secretary of AOG in Australia he took a stand for sound biblical doctrine, values and practices which he felt were under attack from erroneous teachings. Consequently, he resigned from this position in 1992. On the basis of this conviction he launched Christian Witness Ministries (CWM) in 1994 and established the first CWM Fellowship in January 2000 in Brisbane.

Throughout his ministry life, Powell has been a writer and correspondent, editing several publications that have been widely and internationally distributed. He is the editor of the quarterly magazine Contending Earnestly for The Faith published by CWM. This magazine is freely distributed throughout Australia, New Zealand, and UK and more sparsely within US and many other countries.

He has been a critic of the business activities of some of Australia's large pentecostal churches and has been interviewed by media outlets about this issue.

Powell is the pastor of a local church, Christian Witness Ministries Fellowship. in Brisbane, Australia. He also runs an annual national conference for CWM and carries out an itinerant faith ministry.
