Philip N. Gumbs (April 29, 1923 – October 18, 2005) was an American Democratic Party politician from New Jersey, who served on the Monmouth County, New Jersey Board of Chosen Freeholders.

Biography

Gumbs, the first, and to date, only African American to serve on the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders, served on the Aberdeen Township council from 1972 to 1975; he served as Mayor of Aberdeen, New Jersey from 1974 to 1975. A lawyer, he was elected to the Board of Chosen Freeholders in 1973 and served from January 1974 until April 1976 when he resigned to take a position as a Worker's Compensation Court Judge.

Gumbs was chosen as Director of the Board for the years 1975 and 1976.
