Peak Ventures is a seed-stage venture capital firm based in Provo, Utah. The firm provides investment and team support for high-growth tech companies in Utah and the Mountain West region. Peak prefers to lead out investments as the first institutional capital in, with typical investments of $250K-$1M. Roughly 50% of the businesses Peak Ventures invested in are located in Utah, 25% outside of Utah but in the Mountain West, and 25% are outside of the Mountain West.
The firm was begun in 2014 by the founding team of Jeff Burningham, Sid Krommenhoek, John Mayfield and Sam Bernards. Burningham is also Managing Partner and co-founder of Peak Capital Partners, a $1B+ real estate investment firm located in Provo, Utah. Krommenhoek cofounded Zinch, an ed-tech company connecting students globally with opportunities in higher education, and led the company through concept, venture capital, international expansion, acquisition (Chegg, Inc.) and IPO (CHGG, NYSE). Bernards' experience spans co-founding 7 startups to working within global enterprise organizations, including Walmart corporate, where he co-authored Walmart’s $80B growth strategy and created an internal startup that raised $200M in capital, grew its team to 300 people, and launched Walmart Express, which achieved $10M per month in total store sales before Sam moved on from the corporation. John has background in two high-growth tech startups, Instructure and Qualtrics. Prior to this, Mayfield spent several years in the bay area at Duff & Phelps, a global leader in valuation, where he worked on valuations for top companies in the tech industry. Mayfield also spent time at Peterson Ventures where he sourced, evaluated, and made investments in early-stage companies.
Peak Ventures has made investments in 31 companies to date. In 2013, Peak Ventures led an $800,000 seed round for Studio.
In 2014, Peak led a $650,000 seed round for Grasswire.
In 2015, Peak invested $300,000 in Zipbooks, a small business accounting program. Peak also invested in Homie, a real estate tech startup. In the same year, Peak led a seed round in ClientSuccess.
In 2016, Peak led a $1.1 million round in ClearVoice.
