Etymology

The barrio acquired its name from the plants that are growing abundantly in the area - the pandan plants (Pandanus amaryllifolius). These plants are used, until now, to add aromatic and exotic scents in most delicacies and rice cooking.

Historical background

The history of Pandan starts off in exactly the same way as those of most areas in the Philippines and we can go as far back as the Spanish occupation of the country. The history starts in 1796 when the entire province was claimed by Don Angel de Miranda in search of a new settlement. They cleared out a part of the woods and made the area suitable for farming. In 1899, when the American forces arrived, the inhabitants of Pandan were among the Filipino soldiers who defended Angeles City, a battle which lasted three whole months. Despite the battle between the Filipinos and Americans during the latter’s first arrival, these men fought side by side during the second World War.

The late part of the 18th century was the founding of another barrio in Angeles. Through the initiative of the late Don Jose “Pepe” Henson, together with Don Clemente N. Dayrit Sr. Barangay Pandan was born. The forefathers decided to clear the area and cultivate it to make it more productive and suitable for growth.

With the eighty-one pioneers that established residence in the area, it has grown to a blooming number of 17,895 residences in the barrio’s population projection for 2011.
