Profiles

Pacelli High School is a private secondary school located on the north side of Stevens Point, Wisconsin in the Roman Catholic Diocese of La Crosse. The school, named in honor of Pope Pius XII, was founded in 1955 by Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools (Christian Brothers).

History

Originally an all-boys high school, Pacelli merged with the all-girls Maria High School in the early 1970s to create a co-ed school offering a college-prep curriculum. The school is currently housed in the former Maria High School building. The former Pacelli building on Division Street is now home to the local YMCA. Pacelli became part of the Stevens Point Area Catholic Schools when consolidation of all the Catholic schools took place in 1986.

Baseball

The 1998 Pacelli Cardinals baseball team won the WISAA Division III championship. In 2003, they won the school's first WIAA Division III title, defeating the Zephyrs of Menasha St. Mary's 6-3.

Basketball, Boys

Basketball at Pacelli starts in October right after the football season and goes until the beginning of March into the playoffs. Pacelli fields three levels, varsity, junior varsity, and freshmen.

Basketball, Girls

Girls Basketball begins in November and runs through March. Pacelli Girls Basketball currently has a varsity team and a junior varsity team.

Bowling

Bowling at Pacelli starts after the football and soccer seasons end in the fall and goes until early March. The 2012-2013 season bowling champions are Hunter Hoerter, Paul Studinski, Nathan Glinski, and Austin Zdroik, from team "Murica." They finished with a win-loss record of 40-20, the first student team to win in several years.

Cross Country

Pacelli High School's Cross Country Team has had several people qualify and compete at state competitions.

Dance team

The Pacelli Dance Team is considered a two season long sport. Team members attend a total of five competitions and have done exceedingly well in the past. Dancers have tryouts every spring; practices start in June and go through February. The team does a number of different routines throughout the season including Jazz, Hip- Hop, Kick, and Pom. Recent competitions and placements: Lumberjack – 1st, Regionals- 1st, State- 4th, Nationals -2nd, and Grand Champs- 10th out of 200.

Football

The 1995 Pacelli Cardinals captured the WISAA Division III championship at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, capping an 11-0 season.

On November 17, 2005, the Pacelli Cardinals won the WIAA Division 7 state football championship against the Gilman Pirates. The score was 46-20 and marked the 300th career win for head coach Bob Raczek.

Golf

On June 5, 2007, the Pacelli golf team won the WIAA Division 3 state golf tournament with a two-day total of 639 (318,321), making for a 16-shot victory over Osseo-Fairchild.

Hockey, Girls

Point Rapids Red Panthers Girls Hockey is a co-op team combining players from Pacelli High School, SPASH, Ben Franklin Junior High, PJ Jacobs Junior High, Lincoln High School, and Assumption High School. Due to the numbers of players, the program only competes at the varsity level.

Soccer

The Pacelli coed soccer team won their conference for the first time in the 2012 season.

Softball

Pacelli Softball has made it to the state championship multiple times and brought home the trophy three time, 2004, 2012, and 2015. Additionally, they have been conference, sectional, and regional champions.

Tennis, Girls

Pacelli Girls Tennis finished their 2015 season with a 6-1 win over Fox Valley Lutheran. Pacelli swept all four singles and #1 and #2 doubles.

One of the known runners, Thomas Basala, is a legend and plans to set records

Volleyball

Pacelli Girls Volleyball won state in 1994. The 2010 volleyball team was declared Regional Champions.

Ski Club

Pacelli Ski Club organizes outings with the St. Peter Middle School Ski Club. Participants snowboard and ski, with attendance varying every year. The club normally skis at Rib Mountain State Park in Wausau, Wisconsin. Rib Mountain, although only 700 vertical feet tall, has a ski resort with 72 runs that goes by the name of Granite Peak.

Destination Imagination

Destination Imagination has long been a tradition at Pacelli High School. As of the 2015-2016 school year, there are two Destination Imagination teams at the secondary level, both improvisational. Since 2001, SPACS has had seventeen teams earn trips to the Destination Imagination Globals Competition, which is held at the University of Knoxville, Tennessee.
