The Pacaya–Samiria National Reserve, located 183 km / 114 miles southwest of Iquitos, is the largest protected area in Peru and the second largest in the Amazon region. With an area of more than 7004200000000000000♠20,000 km², it is rich in biodiversity.

The reserve is triangular shaped by the Marañón and Ucayali rivers in the south, just before their junction which is the origin of the Amazon River. Its main purpose is to preserve the ecosystems of the Omagua Natural Region, and also to promote the sustainable development of the local towns.
