History

When founder Patrick Terry decided to open a burger stand in 2005, his wife Kathy insisted he read Fast Food Nation, by Eric Schlosser. Inspired by what he read, Terry used the book to guide his business practices as he opened his first location in Austin, Texas at Lamar and Barton Springs and then continued to follow those principles as he and his wife opened ten other locations in around Austin. Terry is quoted as saying that Fast Food Nation became the company's bible, "Everything that everyone was doing wrong in that book, we stayed away from.", said Terry, "And the stuff that they were doing right, we aimed toward.".

Products

Remaining faithful to what initially inspired Terry by reading Fast Food Nation, burgers at P. Terry's are hand-patted from hormone-free Black Angus beef. After grilling, burger patties are placed with fresh lettuce and tomato on freshly made hamburger buns. French fries are sliced fresh and fried in pure canola oil. Veggie burgers are made using their own recipe of brown rice, crimini mushrooms and black beans. In 2012 Terry introduced bacon into the menu after a 7-year search for a product that matched the philosophy of the company. The applewood-smoked bacon used is a local product from Texas.

Employee Relations

The restaurant chain is known for paying employees on a higher scale than larger chain competitors. The average wage is $11 per hour. The company started a $10-per-month bonus program (dependent on length of employment) and annually pays out $60,000 in bonuses. P. Terry's also makes no-interest loans of up to $500 to employees. Kathy Terry is known for baking a birthday cake for each of their 320 employees.

Customer Relations

Leashed dogs are welcomed, and all dogs get a free dog biscuit. In 2009 the restaurant won the Critics Dog-Friendliest Patio Award from the Austin Chronicle

Architecture

Each restaurant is site-specific and consequently are all architecturally different. The architecture is inspired by mid 20th century car culture, as well as googie architecture Focal architectural elements of P. Terry locations feature prominent indoor/outdoor roof structures, floor-to-ceiling glass, open kitchens and the use of natural materials such as wood and stone. In addition, Terry insists on open plan concept and seating as he seeks to nurture a neighborhood-oriented dining experience for customers. Terry is known for his careful attention to the smallest details of each unique location he opens.

Charity

Four times a year P.Terry's donates 100 percent of a day's profits to charity. Among the charitable causes supported by the restaurant are Foundation for the Homeless, Dell's Children's Medical Center, Strong Start and HeartGift Foundation.
