History
Carlton Community College was formed in September 2009 from the previous Edward Sheerien (which was previously called St. Helen's Secondary Modern and was where parts of Kes were filmed in 1969) and Royston High schools. It moved in to a new building in January 2011.
Previously a community school administered by Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, Carlton Community College converted to academy status in February 2016 and was renamed Outwood Academy Carlton. The school is now sponsored by the Outwood Grange Academies Trust, but continues to coordinate with Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council for admissions.
