"Out of the Hive" is the first episode of season one of the BBC technological thriller, Bugs. The original airdate was 1 April 1995.

Synopsis

Nick Beckett is a UK government agent based in a technological centre called 'The Hive' - a UK Intelligence base. Top-secret military equipment - a device called SACROS, which can disturb any satellite transmission - is being flow in via helicopter to the base, by a skilled pilot who evades a hot aerial pursuit. When Nick's contact is killed, it leaves him with an unexplained death which his supervisors refuse to investigate. He attempts to smuggle out the DAT tape containing crucial audio evidence of the assassination, but to no avail as he is frisked and dismissed. This dismissal takes an explosive turn when Nick attempts to break back into the Hive, and is caught. Nick enlists the help of Ros Henderson, a tech specialist from the firm 'Gizmos', to help. Originally enlisted to enhance the audio evidence, she rescues Nick from the Hive and later that evening they plan at her flat how to gain access to the Hive, to retrieve the DAT tape. Beckett disturbs a shadowy figure on the apartment balcony to reveal Ed, the helicopter pilot. It transpires that he is Ros' neighbour, who likes the unconventional routes into and out of buildings. He also reveals that Nick's contact was his passenger. Moved by news of his death, Ed agrees to help Nick and Ros by breaking back into the Hive.

After paragliding onto the roof, Ed manages to enter the Hive, and is directed remotely by Nick and Ros to the records room. After being spotted, Ed instead finds the DAT tape in the Head of the service's office, and escapes in the nick of time. Rosa analyses the tape and deduced that Nick's contact was killed at a train station. Using the tracker that was planted on the assassin's car, they discover that the assassin is a woman with links to the head of the service. Beckett's ex-boss is planning to steal the technology of SACROS and hold the world to ransom. With Ros' knowledge of technology, Beckett's skills as a secret agent and Ed's skills as a pilot, they expose both villains for who they truly are - forcing them to take flight - but with SACROS. After an exhilarating chase, the trio corner the villains, who try and escape along an unmarked road. Their flight ends in disaster, and their car careens over an incomplete road bridge - and lands in a fireball, the stolen equipment destroyed for good.
