Our Time Press, the popular Brooklyn, New York based African American owned news-and-views newspaper, began publishing in February 1996.
Co-founded by David Mark Greaves and Bernice Elizabeth Green, the paper started as a monthly, with the couple working from the parlor floor of a Brooklyn brownstone. Mr. Greaves, the publisher, soon expanded the venture to a full enterprise – one of the longest continuously operating small businesses in the neighborhood. It now enjoys a 20,000 weekly printing in an office bordering Clinton Hill and Bedford-Stuyvesant, as a solely owned publication under the aegis of DBG Media, Publishers of Our Time Press, Inc.
Our Time Press covers a range of issues including housing, education, local politics, the national scene and more. It also offers human interest stories and profiles, among its regular features. Danielle Douglass of The Washington Post and Errol Louis, host of Inside City Hall and a former columnist for The New York Daily News, are former recurring Our Time Press columnists.
Our Time Press’ success as “the local paper with the global view” is due to the Brooklyn community’s support of the paper’s fearless “voice” and the paper’s unwavering commitment “to tell the stories that would otherwise be left untold.” Also contributing is the solid professional backgrounds of the publishers, former Bedford-Stuyvesant junior high school classmates. Ms. Green, a consultant in strategic marketing and editorial content to Our Time Press, is a former news, entertainment and corporate communications executive, and has held positions with CBS, The New York Amsterdam News, Random House and Black Enterprise Magazine, among others.
Mr. Greaves’ background includes careers as a filmmaker with his father William Greaves on documentaries earning over 40 international festival awards, as a project manager for major corporate relocations such as the consolidating of 10,000 people at American Express headquarters and in relocation sales with clients Cartier, Inc, Carnegie Corporation and Revlon, Inc., among many others.
