The Our Lady of Mercy Cathedral (Spanish: Catedral de la Merced) also called La Serena Cathedral It is the Cathedral of the Archdiocese of La Serena. It is the largest temple in the city, and one of the cathedrals of Chile and is located in the northeastern corner of the Plaza de Armas in La Serena, at the intersection of Los Carrera street with the Cordovez street.

In its grounds was the Old Parish Matrix-El Sagrario, which stands as the first temple for the founding of La Serena in 1549. In 1741 described the Parish of the matrix as a single construction of a ship of 50 meters long by 10 meters wide, it was 7 altars inside and mid-rise tower to the right. Its walls was seated limestone slab with stones in a mixture of sand and lime .In 1840 the Parish of the Matrix is demolished, and in 1844 the construction of the present Cathedral began using many of the old building materials, handling the French project architect Juan Herbage by 1844.

Built in neoclassical style, it was completed in 1856.
